What are beans exactly?

They also serve as a source of protein, making them a great substitute for meat. Not to forget that they are so affordable!

Black Beans

Black beans are essential for many Mexican and Brazilian dishes. They also have a velvety-smooth texture and a great flavor. Surprisingly, they also reduce blood sugar levels because they have a lower glycemic index than many other high-carb foods. Moreover, you can easily add them to salads, soups, casseroles, or tacos for added protein. They also make a healthy substitute for meat or even flour!

Black-Eyed Peas

This Southern staple has a beige hue with an eye-catching black spot. Hence this is why it is called “black-eyed peas.” They also have an earthy flavor that complements salty foods well. Moreover, they are an excellent source of folate, which is an important nutrient for pregnant women.

Cannellini Beans

Kidney beans

Lima beans

They are white, creamy, or green in color. Furthermore, they have a mild, buttery flavor and a soft texture. They also are a great addition to any soup, or they can stand alone as a side dish. Also, they contain more potassium than kidney beans.


Pinto beans

Pinto beans have an orange-pink color with rust-colored specks. Do you know that pinto actually means “painted” in Spanish? They are loaded with fiber and protein too. In addition, their earthy flavor and smooth texture make them great for dips and stews.

Fava beans

Soybeans are dried and beige in color and are harvested in a mature state. Soybeans also have many uses, including soybean paste, tofu, and soy flour. But these versatile beans can be enjoyed on their own as well! I simply boil the soybeans and add spices and herbs to taste for a yummy, nutrient-packed soybean salad!

Cranberry beans

These are striking cream-colored beans with red speckles to round out my list. Also known as borlotti beans, cranberry beans have a creamy texture and a nutty flavor. They are also often used in Italian dishes such as minestrone soup.
