How to Maintain Your Vegetable Garden?

Unlike ornamental flowers, vegetables require less attention and care. However, ignoring the garden totally is not recommended. Remember once you have sowed your vegetable seeds, the real work begins and you have to dedicate enough time to your garden. If you are a novice in the vegetable garden, then here are some tips on how to maintain your vegetable garden properly!

You will need these materials and tools:

  • Water source, hose, or watering can
  • Organic mulch
  • Hoe
  • Fertilizer

Remember these steps when you are maintaining your garden:

  • Examine your soil before anything else. Plants need healthy soil in the right places. For a healthy soil, use a spade to turn your soil at least once a month to keep it loose and light. If you have clay soil, then consider topping it with organic compost to keep the soil loose and at its peak for a longer period of time. You can use quality or locally purchased compost to improve the soil.
  • Water the soil throughout the growing season to help fast-growing plants to establish strong roots and produce vegetables. Be sure to provide adequate soil moisture to prevent any problems. Try to keep the top 6 inches of the soil moist for seedlings and young plants. Go for a drip irrigation system as it would be a definite plus for a vegetable garden.
  • Mulching is important for the vegetable to grow. Add a 2 to 4-inch layer of organic mulch around your vegetable plants to suppress weeds, maintain soil moisture, reduce watering, moderate soil temperature, improve soil health, and keep vegetable cleaner. Better avoid herbicide-treated lawn clippings hay, and fresh sawdust and manure. In spring, apply mulch after the soil and replace it as much as needed.
  • Use fertilizers more for each vegetable crop has unique nutrient needs throughout the growing season. As you know fertilizers and natural soil texture play an important role in the growth for all types of plants and vegetables. Inquire well before using fertilizers as different plants and vegetables need different quantities.
  • Know when your vegetables are ready for harvesting. If you are a novice in harvest, then learn from the professionals on how to pick vegetables when they mature. You can then start the pruning and taking care of each plant and vegetable in the way you deem right. Remove and destroy any diseased plants. You can also pull up dying plants that are done producing and pile them on the compost pile. Don’t forget to remove all debris from the garden where pests can hide during the winter.

Well, happy gardening to you all!
